And they walked away...It is truly amazing that these guys walked away from this crash. The student was traumatized in a way that no student should be, and will probably not seek a career in helicopter piloting. This is common in cases where students are involved in serious accidents. In the course of this accident, both seats collapsed as they are designed to do which is one of the most significant safety features designed into the R22. A skid tube was pushed up through the cabin between the legs of the instructor, but somehow managed to miss his leg. This accident could have just as easily resulted in the deaths of both persons, but demonstrates the survivability of an aviation accident.
