Where are the Doctors?

There are FAA doctors located in many countries around the world. Often the airport in your area will know where to find an FAA approved doctor, and often they will have his or her phone number. Note that we said FAA approved doctor, as this is required. No personal doctor, or physical is acceptable. A flight physical is different. Find the nearest FAA doctor here.

What will stop you from getting a medical?

Have you been on anti-depressants in the past? Have you been a user of illegal drugs, or addicted to prescription drugs? Do you have a criminal record? These are all issues that you will have to deal with. This is not to say that you will not be able to get a medical, it will just be more difficult. Also, if you are looking for a career in aviation, some of the above named issues may prevent you from a career other than local commercial operations.

What will take place during the medical?

You will be given an eye test; this is usually simple, but some doctors take it a little to far. A whole super eye machine test is not necessary, but some doctors do this when all that is needed is a simple chart test including color definitions.

You will be given a hearing test, and this may be accomplished through normal conversation.

You will be given a urine analyses, and this is primarily to check for diabetes, etc.

You don't have to get undressed, and you won't get examined below the waist. The closest the doctor will get to private parts is through listening to your heart and lungs.

The rest of the physical is pretty basic.
