Helicopter Flight Information |
Ground Resonance Accidentsoccur approximately 15 times each yearGround resonance accidents almost always occur on landing, and are the result of a rough landing in which the pilot fails to correct the condition immediately with the appropriate action. Complete aircraft destruction takes less than 90 seconds from the onset of the vibration which is a result of the rotor blades being knocked out of phase from the rough landing. In the Schweizer accident a student and instructor were practicing a run-on landing when the accident occurred. The instructor failed to keep the helicopter in a hover. This is common as the relatively inexperienced pilot does not comprehend what is occurring in time to react quickly enough. When the instructor felt the vibration, he again landed the helicopter in another run-on landing which compounded the situation and resulted in complete destruction.
